Everyone knows the name Jimmy Buffett, but does everyone know the secret to Jimmy Buffett’s margarita recipe? His musical, Escape to Margaritaville, is currently playing on Broadway and this superstar just shared some secrets about the iconic name and song.

“Most people don’t know the real story behind the song “Margaritaville,” but the truth is that it was written in five minutes,” Buffett says, “It was a hot afternoon, and we stopped at this funky little place for lunch on the way. I thought, ‘Why not have a margarita before going to the airport?’”

Buffett goes on to say that back then, the only place to get a good margarita was in the Mexican border towns- he clearly found himself at the right place at the right time! He ordered one and it was damn good. That’s when he came up with the name Margaritaville.

Buffett says that while these days, margaritas tend to be a bit too sweet for him, he does enjoy a nice, cold one on the rocks with no salt. He says the secret behind a good margarita is to not take it too seriously. “It’s not a science project,” he says. He says the point of the drink is to disguise the tequila, and that’s exactly what he’s done with his secret recipe!

The full Jimmy Buffett margarita recipe can be found below:


  • 1 oz. Margaritaville Tequila Gold
  • 1/2 oz. Margaritaville Tequila Silver
  • 1/2 oz. triple sec
  • 1/2 oz. orange curaçao
  • 1/2 oz. lime juice
  • 2 lime wedges


  1. Rim margarita glass with salt (optional).
  2. Combine ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Squeeze lime on top, then drop wedges in.
  3. Cover, shake vigorously, and pour.

You can be sure to find one in Florida in addition to the Margaritaville Beach Resort. You can pretty much find a Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville anywhere if you’re lucky enough to have one in your state! In addition to some amazing drinks, you can also bet you’re gonna get a stomach-full of amazing food.
