We are where nostalgia lives
Remember the novel Pet Sematary by Stephen King? Remember the original movie adaptation of the novel directed by Mary Lambert? Well, now there’s a brand new 2019 film on the rocks which will be directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer. The screenwriter will be Jeff Buhler, who spoke recently about an update regarding the upcoming film.
“When we first started our conversations, Dennis and Kevin and I really connected around the idea of bringing the story back to the source material, to find a modern telling of the book that really spoke to some of the big scenes and big moments that Stephen King had originally written. And as much as all of us are huge fans of the original film, there are moments that are larger than life and feel borderline campy. Our desire was to tell a really grounded, character-driven and psychologically horrific version of Pet Sematary, which in my belief, is the scariest book that King ever wrote.”
The new film will star Jason Clarke and John Lithgow. Buhler also went onto say that if you loved the book, you’ll love the new movie. When touching on which characters will be in the film, he says, “There may be Victor, there may be some Zelda, and there will definitely be some Louis and Rachel and Gage and Ellie,” which answers some questions, but not all! So far all we know about casting is that of Clarke and Lithgow.
The film is due to open April 19th, 2019. The original film directed by Lambert with a script by King himself follows a family after moving to a new home in Maine right next to a pet cemetery. In this cemetery, the pets buried there come back from the dead. The original was released in 1989 and grossed more than $57 million. There was a sequel called Pet Sematary Two which earned $17 million in 1992 and did not perform as well as the original.

Buhler discussed his goals with the new 2019 film and is feeling pretty great about them. He says, “Dennis and Kevin are both such visionaries in terms of how they’ve approached it, from not only a horror standpoint but also a character standpoint, and it’s been really gratifying to work with those guys. I think we’re on track to it make one of the scariest Stephen King adaptations ever! That’s our goal anyway.”
