We are where nostalgia lives
It’s no secret that every so often you should definitely throw your bed sheets in the wash and replace them with new, clean sheets. The main reason for this is that no one wants bed bugs and dirty sheets are the perfect place for harboring little critters like those.
Philip Tierno, a microbiologist and pathologist at the New York University School of Medicine, shared his insight on the truth about dirty bed sheets. He says, “You have spores of fungi, bacteria, animal dander, pollen, soil, lint, finishing agents of whatever the sheets are made from, colouring material, all sorts of excrements from the body including sweat, sputum, vaginal, and anal excretions, urine milieu, skin cells.” Yeah, pretty gross.
A 2015 study that assessed the level of fungal contamination in bedding revealed between 4 and 17 different species of fungus. They conducted this study with feather and synthetic pillows from one and a half to twenty years old. Tierno says that the amount of bacteria and other types of debris that can accumulate in such a short time on our bedding should be a cause for concern when we leave our sheets for too long.
Then Tierno gets into the dust mite situation, which might be enough to make you run off and change your sheets right now. He talks about how dust mites leave feces and other debris, which are allergens. This could be causing you to wake up with a random stuffy nose in the morning, despite you not being sick. Yuck!
So, the question still lingers. How often should we wash our bed sheets? The answer is weekly.
Tierno reveals that debris and other not-so-fun things begin to accumulate in your bedding between one and two weeks. Because of this, your sheets should be washed at least once per week. If you go over the two week mark, it’s not going to kill you. But to keep things in tip-top shape and hygienic for yourself and those around you, it’s best to keep a strict cleaning schedule for your sheets. Thankfully, you only need to wash your comforter every six months or so.
