We are where nostalgia lives
Everyone knows that The Conners is really just Roseanne without Roseanne Barr as the main character. After Roseanne was fired from the show over a racist tweet, ABC did actually express interest in working with the rest of the cast instead. Instead of replacing Roseanne’s character, they simply decided to go on without her.
Statistics have shown that there are some shows that have decreased in quality after ridding their main character and other shows that have gone on, season after season. With that being said, it’s hard to tell if The Conners will succeed without Roseanne.
ABC was willing to continue on without Roseanne since the revival of the sitcom actually had some great ratings, in comparison to other reboots and revivals that turn out to be flops. With these steps being taken, Roseanne made sure to relinquish the rights to her own creation while still saving the jobs of her castmates.
“I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved,” Roseanne stated sometime after Roseanne’s layoff.
The only thing viewers want to know now is how ABC plans to get rid of Roseanne’s character. Most characters in shows are usually just replaced or they’re killed off. In this case, they decided to go the ‘killing off’ route. Roseanne was the first to drop the news.
“They have her die of an opioid overdose. I wanted to show [opioid struggle] in the show. But I was never going to have Roseanne die of an opioid overdose. It’s so cynical and horrible. She should have died as a hero or not at all … It wasn’t enough to [fire me], they had to so cruelly insult the people who loved that family and that show.”
Roseanne was originally released in October 1988 and ran through May 1997. It was centered around the lives of the Conner family with the main character being Roseanne (Barr). The revival series had a short run from March 2018 to May 2018. The Conners, which is set to premiere on October 16th of this year, will star all of the original Roseanne characters and their original actors.
It’s unknown how the very first episode will be considering that the main character is now killed off due to an opioid overdose. John Goodman, who played Roseanne’s husband, commented on the character change and how all the other characters will need to adapt to it. “I guess he’ll be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead,” Goodman spoke about his own character.
Big shows like The Office suffered after Steve Carrell left to pursue a movie career. Despite the obvious assumption that shows can truly suffer when the main character leaves, Two And A Half Men was one of the shows that defied all odds and went on for five more seasons after replacing Charlie Sheen with Ashton Kutcher.
With this being said, it’s hard to determine if The Conners will be a huge flop or a huge success.
