One service dog’s photo ended up in a school’s yearbook alongside one teen with type 1 diabetes. Andrew “AJ” Schalk is a high school senior at Stafford High School in Falmouth, Virginia with type 1 diabetes who requires a service dog named Alpha to accompany him.

Alpha’s job is to detect when Andrew’s blood sugar levels are too low or too high and to alert him. Alpha has saved his owner’s life many times, proving just how great he is at his job! Alpha is beloved by the school’s community, so much that he even earned his own ID card and his own photo in the school’s yearbook!

It was actually Andrew’s idea to have his service dog’s photo put in the yearbook, and the faculty of the school were more than happy to do that! This was when the Twitter post above went viral when a student of the school took a photo of the dog’s picture in the yearbook. It’s just too wholesome!

This also isn’t the first time that a service dog has earned a spot in the school’s yearbook. An elementary school located in Lake Charles, Louisiana allowed a service dog named Rowdy to be in the yearbook for three years in a row!

“The amazing thing about Alpha is that he knows 20 to 40 minutes before my blood sugar actually does go low or high due to his amazing sense of smell,” Andrew revealed to BuzzFeed News, “I just brought him with me when I got my yearbook picture taken. The only thing they changed was the camera height. They just had to lower it a little.”

“He has been a great companion and added a lot of happiness to my school’s environment,” Andrew explained, “It brightens people’s days seeing him in the halls or in my class and I love being able to have that effect on people.”

“Yes, Alpha is really an amazing animal,” Andrew says about his service dog, “He makes a disability, such as my diabetes, such a positive experience for me and my life overall, and really turns it into a blessing rather than a negative part of my life.

A woman in Canada named Bailey Jean Matheson was told she had two years to live. She decided to live her best life for the rest of her days and inspire others to do the same. Bailey had always been healthy but unfortunately was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma, a very rare cancer.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Leiomyosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that affects smooth muscle tissue. These tumors are most common in the abdomen but can occur anywhere in the body, including the uterus. Other common sites include blood vessels and skin.”

She wrote her own obituary in hopes to inspire others

She began the obituary with the phrase, “35 years may not seem long, but damn it was good!”

It continues, “To my parents, thank you for supporting me and my decisions throughout my life. I always remember my mom saying losing a child would be the hardest loss a parent could go through. My parents gave me the greatest gift of supporting my decisions with not going through chemo and just letting me live the rest of my life the way I believed it should be. I know how hard that must have been watching me stop treatment and letting nature take its course. I love you both even more for this.”

Bailey said that the diagnosis was a blessing in disguise in a way because it allowed her to live her fullest life, travel, and do everything she always wanted to do.

She traveled to the United States, Ireland, England, Norway, Croatia, Montenegro, St. Lucia, Mexico, France, Morocco, Greece, Portugal, and Spain. She also got to see her favorite band, Coldplay, twice in concert.

“To my friends, being an only child, I’ve always cherished my friendships more than anything because I’ve never had siblings of my own. I never thought I could love my friends more than I did but going through this and having your unconditional love and support you have made something that is normally so hard, more bearable and peaceful. Thank you and I love you all so much.”

She traveled with her boyfriend, who she met only three months before her diagnosis

She also thanks her boyfriend, “To my Brent, you came into my life just three months before my diagnosis. You had no idea what you were getting yourself into when you swiped right that day. I couldn’t have asked for a better man to be by my side for all the adventures, appointments, laughs, cries and breakdowns. You are an amazing person and anyone in your life is so fortunate to know you. I love you beyond words.”

She also asked that instead of flowers at her funeral, donations be made to Melanie’s Way or Young Adults Cancer Canada instead. She ends it with the quote, “Don’t take the small stuff so seriously and live a little.” Bailey passed away on April 5, 2019. We hope that her inspiring words help others to live a better, more fulfilling life. Sending thoughts and prayers to her family and friends during this difficult time.

Princess Diana Opens Up About Postpartum Depression Troubles

Princess Diana once opened up about how unbearable the media was during her pregnancy with Prince William, but the awful feeling didn’t go away once he was born. She spoke to Andrew Morton for his 1992 book Diana: Her True Story, and she was open and honest about how she struggled with postpartum depression, something that many new moms face.

“Came home and then postnatal depression hit me hard and it wasn’t so much the baby that had produced it, it was the baby that triggered off all else that was going on in my mind,” she said to Morton, “Boy, I was troubled.”

Princess Diana also shared that the troubles of postpartum depression would often cause unnecessary panic and anxiety in other parts of her life. A lot of this would be projected onto her husband, Prince Charles.

She said, “If he didn’t come when he said he was coming home I thought something dreadful had happened to him. Tears, panic, all the rest of it. He didn’t see the panic because I would sit there quietly.”

On top of the depression and anxiety she was already feeling, it didn’t help that she felt shunned by the Royal Family at Prince William’s christening. It just elevated her feelings of sadness.

“Endless pictures of the Queen, Queen Mother, Charles, and William,” she explained, “I was excluded totally that day. I felt desperate because I had literally just given birth – William was only 6 weeks old. And it was all decided around me. Hence the ghastly pictures… Everything was out of control, everything. I wasn’t very well and I just blubbed my eyes out. William started crying too. Well, he just sensed that I wasn’t exactly hunky-dory.”

Many actresses in Hollywood will do anything to avoid aging or looking older. But, it appears that Reese Witherspoon is actually embracing and even enjoying the process! She recently said she actually enjoys seeing those gray hairs and wrinkles in the mirror.

What is her reasoning? None of us really admit that we enjoy seeing gray hairs and wrinkles, let alone those in the public eye. But, she said she loves the reminders of how much she has grown in her life and career. She said she has earned every single one of those gray hairs and fine lines. We totally agree!

So, how old is Reese now?

Reese is currently 43 years old and has teenagers, which likely makes you age faster! What a great attitude she has! It is so easy to get caught up in what society says you should look like. Gray hair and wrinkles are a reminder of how lucky you are to be alive and how much you’ve been through.

What is her biggest regret when it comes to how she took care of herself in the past? She remembers that the ’90s were big about thin eyebrows. Did you have barely-there brows in the ’90s? Many people did. Reese said she looks back at photos now and hates how her eyebrows looked. She wishes she didn’t pluck them so thin.

This Fifth Grade Math Problem Is Stumping Everybody — Can You Solve It?

This article is from Do You Remember. Click the title to hop over there.

Here at DYR, we love testing your knowledge (and our own) with math questions that we probably could’ve aced in fifth grade. This one is another one that will prove if you are, in fact, smarter than a fifth grader! This math problem is stumping everyone on the Internet right now. Maybe you could solve it!

The math equation is “9 – 3 ÷ 1/3 + 1 = ?” and the best way to solve it is by using the mnemonic device PEMDAS. This also stands for “parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction” or the order of operations! However, there’s a twist to this one (audible groan). Many people have landed on 9 as the answer, but this is not correct.

math problem

So, what is the answer? The answer is 1. How do you get this answer? TipHero explains how to get this answer.

“What you want to do here is start over by tackling 3 ÷ 1/3 first, and no, you’re not supposed to multiply here. Divide! Hint: 3 divided by 1/3 is actually 9. Take it from there. Using a calculator, it’s likely that it will read that relationship between 3 and 1/3 as a funky way to arrive at 1 before working out the rest of the equation. If you did that too, we understand how you arrived at your final answer.”

Reader’s Digest also adds, “Now, the PEMDAS rules call for you to solve all addition and subtraction problems in the order they appear. So instead of adding first, you will solve the equation from left to right.”

“If you still need a visual explanation of how to solve the problem, check out the video [not included], which pulls the division component from the middle, showing how to solve 3 ÷ 1/3, which becomes 3/1 ÷ 1/3, which equals 9. Once you’ve solved that, you can move from left to right with the operations: 9-9+1. 9-9 is 0, add that to 1 and your answer is 1.”

Now, if you’re like me and were never good at math in school, this is just a bunch of mumbo-jumbo to you. However, try your best and see if you can come out with 1 as the answer! One person commented something surprising that might either confuse you or help you.

“It’s simple… FRACTIONS. Division is invert. Cancel and multiply… this is done before any subtracting… so, take the middle… 3/1 divide by 1/3. this is the same a 3/1 X 3/1 which is 9. Now put this back into the equation… 9-9+1 = 1. Simple… if you remember your fractions.”

Do You Remember What This Object Is?

Take a look at the photo above. If you were born after 1970, you might be stumped. You might think it is a bottle opener or a very small wrench. But, nope it is neither of those things! Rack your brain and see if you can come up with the answer.

We love looking back at vintage items that many people may have long forgotten about. This little object was likely a big part of your social life if you were a teen in the ’60s and ’70s. Do you know what it is yet?

This item is a skate key!

Roller skating used to be a very popular social activity. This is when discos were all the rage. Before skates had laces, there were metal roller skates. They were actually strapped on over your shoes, instead of replacing them.

To make sure that they were tight enough to skate with, you had to tighten them using this skate key. Each pair of metal roller skates came with a key. The key fit into the loop near the top so that you could tighten the skates and be able to fit in them. Do you remember doing this now?

What happens if you lost that small key?

While kids were skating around, most wore this key on a string around their neck so that they wouldn’t lose it and be unable to tighten the skates. If you lost the key, you would have to get new skates! Your parents likely made you keep that key handy because they wouldn’t buy you a new pair if you lost the skate key.

Skates are so different these days and roller skating just isn’t that popular anymore. Skating rinks are going away slowly but surely. It is such a sad thought! Do you remember when you got your first metal skates and this skate key? Where did you go skating with your friends?

Do you have any metal roller skate and a skate key lying around? Unfortunately, according to eBay, they aren’t worth much these days, coming up at only a few dollars. So, if you do still own them, it may be best to keep them around for nostalgic purposes!

If you enjoyed this nostalgic article, please SHARE with your friends and family and have them guess what this object is! You’ll surely stump the younger generation with this one.
