Chances are that you’ve visited a loved one in a nursing home at some point in your life. While these tight-knit communities for the elderly are meant to provide care for your loved ones during their later years, the truth is that they can also be kind of depressing.

Even though I’ve spent relatively little time in such facilities, I know that their dull, drab decor is anything but inviting. And if my mood is instantly affected by the aesthetic of these nursing homes, imagine what it’d be like to live in them.

The Lantern of Chagrin Valley Nursing Home in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, is hoping to change all that with its uplifting take on senior living.

A special fiber optic lighting system is used to simulate clouds in the sky, and it even brings out dazzling stars at night.

The floors of the home are designed to look like grass, and residents are treated to the sounds of birds chirping every morning.

CEO Jean Makesh states that every decor decision is directly tied to a therapeutic advantage. He is hopeful that such an environment will slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s and dementia in his residents.
