A recent video by a hairstylist went viral for its ‘gross factor’. The hairstylist warned people against cheap drugstore shampoo and conditioner because of what it can do to your hair. The video shows her using scissors to carefully go down the hair shaft. What is revealed is white, waxy buildup residue. It looks disgusting!
It immediately made people wonder if their hair would do that too. The hairstylist said that the buildup is the result of years of using drugstore shampoo. Many cheaper hair products contain waxes, silicones, and parabens, which cause buildup in your hair. They are not natural ingredients. She compares silicone to rubber and plastic.

You guys. I took this video yesterday of my client. This is the result from years of using drugstore shampoo. This is build up from waxes silicones and parabens. Silicone is almost like rubber or plastic and is used as a sealant against water and even air. It’s NOT a natural ingredient and its side effects are bad for our hair. It gives your hair the illusion of shine, but it’s not the shine we want. We then bake it onto our hair with 450° hot tools and basically what it does is laminate the hair. Then when you color your hair it’s really coloring that build up on your hair and not penetrating to the core center of your hair. It’s also not allowing your natural oils and/or the ingredients in a proper shampoo to penetrate to the core center of your hair, it’s just sitting on top of that build up causing greasiness, flat, lifeless hair. Please share this video! Spread the word and stop the buildup — talk to me! 🖤

The client in the viral video had been using drugstore shampoo with silicone for over three decades. This created an insane amount of waxy buildup in her hair.
Silicones are often added to hair products to help make hair thicker and fuller. So, if you have thin hair and buy a thickening or volumizing shampoo… check the ingredients. These ingredients aren’t necessarily bad for you, but they can create that thick coating of buildup that you don’t want.
Other symptoms may include itchy scalp and noticeable white flakes. It can also make your hair difficult to style.
So, how do you get rid of this annoying buildup in your hair?

This is all the waxy goodness that builds up on your hair when you use grocery store product. It’s not only Suave but also Tressemme, herbal essences, etc. Yum! 🤢 It not only strips color when you use it to wash but would block the color from getting in the cuticle too so resulting in an uneven lift/color. Result: Only use professional product. Happy hair and happy scalp 👍🏻Don’t fret, you can use your grocery store conditioner to shave with! I love shaving my legs with Suave 😆 Its true. #professional #loveyourhair #loveyourself #treatyourself #begoodtoyourself #hairstylist #healthyhair #wax #buildup #hairbuildup #gross

Hairstylists recommend using a clarifying shampoo about once a week. Clarifying shampoos help to cleanse your hair fully and get rid of any buildup. When you shampoo with clarifying shampoo, really scrub your hair to get everything out.
Look at the ingredients when you are shopping for shampoo. If you’re unsure what to buy for your specific hair type, ask your hairstylist for advice.
Don’t try the scissor scraping method at home! If you’re really curious, ask your hairstylist to show you the next time you get a haircut. If you try it yourself, you could end up messing up your hair and damaging it.
What do you think about this video and advice? What kind of shampoo do you use? Did you know how much buildup can stay in your hair even after you think you washed it out?
