According to Family Handy Man, “more than 25 million Americans have their packages stolen right from their doorsteps by porch pirates each year.” The holiday season is here and porch pirates are gearing up to steal your stuff right from your doorstep. It’s frustrating, annoying, and puts you in an awkward position because it was likely a gift for someone else.
However, we have quite a few great ways to prevent porch pirates from successfully stealing your items, so you can be sure they are safe and sound. Keep on reading!
1. Require a Signature
You can always require a signature for your drop-off, whether it’s being delivered through UPS, FedEx, or USPS. When it’s time to check out, just take an extra moment to check off ‘signature required’ or request it. Or, if you won’t be home, you can give an address of a trusted neighbor who will be there to sign for you.
2. Pay for a Packing Receiving Service
While this may cost some extra bucks, it’s a surefire way of ensuring your packages are safe and won’t be stolen. Delivery services such as FedEx and UPS offer locker services where they’ll put your package in a locker especially for you so you can come and pick it up at your convenience. Amazon also offers Amazon locker services!
3. The Porch Pirate Bag

Yes, this is a real thing. You can outsmart your impending porch pirate by placing a 30-inch x 40-inch PVC reinforced nylon bag that locks to your front door or gate. It instructs delivery drivers to drop off the package in the bag, then lock it using the combination lock. It’s also only $35 so it could help, and also adds a little humor to the situation!
4. Purchase a Package Guard

When purchasing a package guard, you simply connect it to your WiFi and place it right on your doorstep. Delivery drivers will place the package on top of the frisbee-like device and if a porch pirate attempts to steal the package, a loud siren will be activated. The only way to deactivate the alarm is through the app that comes with it, so a loud siren would likely deter a porch pirate!
5. Motion Detector Lights/Security Camera
You’ll be able to catch impending thieves red-handed with both of these gadgets. They don’t do well with motion detector lights as they’ll realize they’ve been caught and run off. Security camera footage can ensure that, if they are successful in stealing a package, you’ll have their face on-camera. Both of these paired together can ensure package-stealing prevention and also knowing who it was in the process.
