It looks like Ellen Degeneres is facing quite a bit of backlash after comparing self-quarantine during the coronavirus pandemic to being in jail. Degeneres joins the list of other celebrities that are taking their talkshows virtual and doing them from home. She made this comment while broadcasting her talk show from home and it did not sit well with viewers.

“One thing that I’ve learned from being in quarantine is that people — this is like being in jail, is what it is,” she says. “It’s mostly because I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay.”

As previously mentioned, this comment did not sit well with viewers at home. Since the backlash began, the video clip is now ‘unavailable’ on YouTube. Viewers commenting in the YouTube comment section of the video call Degeneres “tone deaf” for what she says in the clip.

“I feel bad for the kids at home, all the college students, all the parents,” Degeneres went on to say. “I feel bad for a lot of people. But I think that a lot of people out there need words of encouragement, and that’s what I want to do.” Despite going out of her way to try and clear the air of a bad joke, viewers were still not happy and continued to think that her comment was insensitive.

Not the only thing that is earning backlash during this time

“Sitting inside her fifteen million dollar mansion complaining and comparing it to a prison, very tone deaf, Ellen,” one YouTube commenter says. Another writes, “Except that people in jail can’t practice social distancing, don’t have enough water or toilet paper and are going to die at exceptional rates from Covid-19. Except for that, Ellen, your quarantine experience is just like being in jail.”

While this piece of coronavirus entertainment was not well-received, this is not the only one that has earned some backlash. Just a few weeks ago, a video montage of celebrities singing John Lennon’s “Imagine” was not well-received by listeners at home. Just one of the many comments says, “Imagine — IMAGINE — having $17 million dollars and thinking that making a video clip of you singing one line of a song would help anyone.”
