With Bindi Irwin being the daughter of the late Steve Irwin, it’s no shocker that her wedding would be filled with animals and wildlife. Her marriage to Chandler Powell was officiated at the Australia Zoo with just a few guests of their immediate family. All of this was happening in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, so they made sure to not have a big ceremony with a ton of people gathered into one place.

“We didn’t really have a schedule, so we were like, ‘Well, let’s just have breakfast then get ready whenever we feel like it,’” she says. “It was almost like we were eloping. Kind of crazy and certainly not what we had planned, but I think that made it even more special. Even if it wasn’t by-the-book perfect, it was our perfect.”

A set of exclusive wedding photos were obtained by People Magazine. The photos show the couple on their big day joined by the beloved animals of Australia Zoo. “We thought about postponing, because you want to share this day with everyone, but when it boiled down to it, we both just said, ‘Look, we desperately want to get married, and no matter what the future holds, at least we’ll be husband and wife. We can take on the world together,’” Bindi recalls about her big day.

Bindi reflects on the anxieties from the big day, and shares that having her family cheering them on from afar gave them the courage that they needed to persist. Even when Chandler’s family could not be there for the ceremony, “they said, ‘We fully support you, we love you, just get married.’” Everyone from both sides of the family supported them 100% and wanted every single detail!

“I think it’s an interesting parallel that Steve and I first met at Australia Zoo, and Bindi and Chandler first met at Australia Zoo,” Bindi’s mom, Terri, says. “So many memories came flooding back. It was a day where I wish Steve was there, but I think he really was. He would have been the first to cry happy tears.”

There’s also no surprise that at their wedding, they made sure to honor Bindi’s late father Steve Irwin, who died in a tragic accident back in 2006. “We had Dad’s picture with his dog Sui blown up on an easel,” Bindi says. “So Mom and Robert were standing right next to Dad as we exchanged vows. We had a candle-lighting ceremony for him, and it really felt like he was there with us. It was a lovely moment of peace and happiness.”

Bindi also reveals that her bouquet was tied with a khaki ribbon instead of a traditional blue one.

There has also opened up about the moment that he saw his now-wife in her wedding gown. “The first time I saw Bindi in that dress was the most beautiful sight in the world,” he reveals. Aww! “I immediately teared up. Nothing has ever felt more right than that moment in time.”

The couple, who are now happily married, have thought about how their future is going to be in continuing Steve’s legacy and running Australia Zoo. “It’s lots of love, wildlife and of course khaki,” Chandler says. “Just getting to spend our years doing what we love with the person we love.”

You have even discussed adding another family member to the bunch, but for now, they are just enjoying married life and each other. We’ve already started our family by getting married, but maybe one day we’ll have our own little wildlife warriors. For now I just feel lucky I get to call this guy my husband. There’s so much life to live. Every day will be an adventure.” Congratulations to the married couple!
