Alex Trebek is trending on Twitter now for a comment he made to a contestant during Jeopardy! recently when she talked about the nerdcore music genre. The conversation began with a curious and informative tone. But it ended with a young contestant receiving an intense word of judgment from Trebek. Now, the video is on Twitter and has received millions of views.

Comments are divided. Some are praising the reply, others find good humor in it. But others still are unpleasantly shocked that the host would say such a thing to a contestant. The latter group saw this as confirmation that Trebek has a mean side. In some cases, this seems to be a generational divide. What do you think?

“Losers, in other words”

Can some nerd find a way to make sure we never lose Alex Trebek? Thanks.

No one wants to be called out in any situation. But hearing rude comments on live television in front of a big audience can be even worse. The contestant, librarian Susan Cole, faced a situation like this during Wednesday’s episode of Jeopardy! Prompted by a previous reply, Trebek stated, “Your favorite type of music is something I’ve never heard of, but it doesn’t sound like fun.”

She replied with an explanation. “I think it’s very fun. it’s called nerdcore hip hop.” At this point, Trebek chimed in to echo what he’d just heard. “Nerdcore hip hop?” The young woman provided confirmation and an explanation. “Yeah, it’s people who identify as nerdy rapping about the things they love: video games, science fiction, having a hard time meeting romantic partners.” At this point, the audience gave a long rumble of laughter, but the contestant concluded, “It’s really catchy and fun.” Finally, Alex Trebek shared his now-infamous final verdict about these nerdcore singers: “Losers, in other words.” Trebek assured shortly after his comment he was “teasing,” according to Variety. Cole, for her part, laughed along with the comment and went on to win $22,600. We’ll see her again on Thursday.

Nerdcore hip hop and Alex Trebek have sparked a debate

As the clip gathers more and more views, people are providing their opinions on the matter. Some point out that Trebek has pulled harsh moments like this before, which is seen in this Yahoo story. Thus, things like this should not be noteworthy. Indeed, after seeing the clip, one user – after voicing gratitude Trebek wasn’t trending for more grim reasons – shared a video of other “savage” moments, shared below. But others still think his response was unfair and overly harsh. It takes a lot to be in front of an audience, and she was forced to endure whatever comments he made and laughter it generated.

There are still even more opinions pouring in. Some think the comment was downright justified, even deserved. In moments like these, we can also see differing opinions about what defines a cool label. Over the years, people changed how they viewed nerds, losers, cool kids, and more. Eventually, “nerd” became a compliment, and some people might don the title of “loser” with pride. But was it earnestly meant when Alex Trebek called her and the nerdcore hip hop rappers losers? Does it matter? Some people feel it does – very much so. Others are cheering right behind him. What do you think? Was this too harsh on a contestant who came just to have fun and win?

Saw Alex Trebek trending, glad to see he is trending for being a savage on Jeopardy and not health reasons.
