We are where nostalgia lives
Summer is here and can be one of the most fun seasons of the year. BBQing, swimming, parties, going camping or on vacation… the list goes on. However, there are certain health dangers that come around in the summer that can be easy to ignore.
Here are some of the top health dangers you should be aware of this summer.
1. Eyeball sunburns
You might be careful not to get a sunburn, but did you know that you can get a sunburn on your eyeballs? This condition is called photokeratitis and it can happen within just a few hours of exposure to a strong sun. Make sure you wear UV-protective sunglasses every time you go outside or you may be at risk for cataracts, macular degeneration or growths on your eyes. Remember to always wear sunscreen too and reapply every few hours to protect your skin. Have someone put sunscreen on your back and make sure you don’t miss any areas. You can get burnt even on cloudy days.
2. E. Coli
If you love swimming at your local beach, you might be at risk of catching E.coli. Being exposed to fecal contamination and bacteria is very common at the beach where birds and bugs are swimming as well. Be sure to cover any cuts you have and wash your hands after getting out of the water every time. You also risk contamination in the sand, not just the water.
3. Heat stroke/heat exhaustion
When the weather heats up, you must know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Extreme heat kills 175 people in the United States every year and the elderly and the young are more at risk. If you have been in the heat, don’t ignore signs like dizziness, headache, nausea, fatigue, and sweating. If your body temperature reaches a dangerous 104 degrees, you may stop sweating. Stay cool in the shade or indoors, drink lots of water and listen to your body’s warning signs and watch for signs in others.
Additionally, when the weather gets warmer, you may want to swim more. Never swim alone and watch out for others. Drowning is very common in pools, lakes, and oceans in the summer months. Make sure you swim with a lifeguard or trusted person.
5. Alcohol-induced dehydration
Summer parties might be plenty and the drinks may be flowing, but watch out for alcohol-induced dehydration. It is easier to get dehydrated while drinking in the heat. Keep your drinks to a minimum and stay hydrated with water while you drink alcohol.
6. Food poisoning
At summer parties as well, make sure to check the food. Spoiled food is a cause of an illness that spikes in the summer because food tends to sit outdoors.
